Which is better:

SUPPORTING THE ARTS or RECEIVING YEAR-END TAX BENEFITS?

What if you could do both at the same time?

In exchange for your charitable gift of cash or appreciated stock to The Laboratory Theater of Florida, you may receive the following benefits if you make your gift before December 31, 2017:

ANY GIFT to the Lab Theater is fully tax-deductible and will directly benefit arts and culture in Fort Myers and southwest Florida. Our theater is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization which makes significant contributions to arts education, while providing thought-provoking entertainment for patrons of all ages.

  • STOCK:

For gifts of appreciated stock, you may partially avoid capital gains tax that would have been due if you sold the stock.

  • TAX-EXEMPT:

If you’re at least 70 ½, you may instruct your IRA custodian to transfer any amount up to $100,000 directly to The Laboratory Theater of Florida. This way, your gift would not be included in your taxable income, but could fulfill all or some of your 2017 required minimum distribution.

  • GIFT PLEDGE YOUR ESTATE:

Receive an immediate income tax reduction by pledging a gift that’s not due until after you or your spouse pass. You may claim it to the full extent allowed by law and carry forward any leftover deductions for up to five subsequent years.

YOUR GIFT IS HELPING OUR COMMUNITY

  • Due to Hurricane Irma, the theater was forced to cancel its scheduled autumn fundraiser, on which it relies for much-needed community support of its programming. Also, many of our staff, volunteers, and casts & crew had to evacuate, forcing cancellation of performances and, of course, the accompanying income for the theater!

  • Lab Theater brings cutting-edge and classical theater to the community, such as the Florida premiere of An Act of God, fresh from Broadway; the Florida premiere of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane: a parody of the horror; I And You; Romeo & Juliet; The Graduate; Death of a Salesman; and the ever-popular 24-Hour Playwriting Project.

  • The theater’s new Education Building is scheduled to open in early 2018, offering courses in performing arts, mindful meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, and more.

  • Lab Theater is also dedicated to providing community outreach, and cooperates with local agencies such as Human Trafficking Awareness Partnerships, ACT, SalusCare, The SWFL Community Foundation, Lee Health, The McGregor Clinic, Partners for Breast Cancer Care, WGCU Radio, Quality Life Center, The Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, The LGBT Fund of the SWFL Community Foundation, Lee County middle and high schools, and more.

  • Lab Theater started with three determined volunteers and no permanent home; after 9 and a half years of renting, scrimping, and saving, we today have seven staff people and almost 200 volunteers annually, creating arts jobs and community in southwest Florida.

  • Lab Theater actors come from Port Charlotte to Marco Island, and from Sanibel to LaBelle; the majority of the casts and crews have regular day jobs and give back to their community by volunteering at the theater. They participate in nine shows per year, plus educational camps, playwriting class, and various events.

  • Annette Trossbach was awarded the 2017 WGCU Makers Award for her leadership of The Laboratory Theater of Florida. “She takes chances with the subject matter and fills a vital role in helping the arts reflect the social issues we face,” said WGCU’s Barbara Lindstrom. This award for community outreach through theater and art is possible because of your support.

NEW EXCITING WAYS TO MAKE YOUR CONTRIBUTION COUNT

We have recently purchased our 1.3 acre property, which includes our theater, built in 1923, two outbuildings, and several outdoor spaces. Our vision is to expand our impact in the Fort Myers River District. Our new space offers donors the unique opportunity to have a permanent, lasting, physical impact on the theater’s functionality and aesthetic. One may memorialize oneself or a loved one through naming one of our three buildings as well as the outdoor Shakespeare Garden and many other spaces. Other specific needs include but are not limited to:

  • installation of lighting
  • grids and LED instruments
  • installation of a marquee outside of the building
  • installation of solar panels to help offset the high cost of electricity for the property
  • the development of a full-time, year-round Arts & Culture program
